Why Caribbean & Mediterranean Cruises Make Sense
Beyond the obvious convenience, cruising brings extraordinary value. Your fare typically covers your stateroom, all meals, premium entertainment, and many onboard activities, so you can travel from port to port without worrying about separate hotel bills or a string of surprise expenses. Couples can watch the sunset from a private balcony without ever signing a dinner check, and parents can let the kids try another gelato or grab a second scoop of soft-serve without doing mental vacation-cost math.
Today’s cruise lines have turned the idea of a floating hotel into a world-class travel experience. These really are a great value. I’ve been on countless cruises, and they are all fun, in different ways! Enjoy plush spa suites, sommelier-curated wine tastings, and menus designed by Michelin-starred chefs. I’ve enjoyed quality shows, funny comedians, good music, the chef’s table, the casino, and a lot more. Whether it’s a moonlit sail away from San Juan or a sunny excursion in Cinque Terre, the modern cruise experience rivals the finest land-based resorts. and then takes you somewhere new the next morning. You get to experience multiple destinations on the same trip!

Why I like cruising! Travel Rooster Style
I love cruising because it blends the thrill of travel with the ease of having everything I need in one floating resort. There’s nothing like waking up to a new place each morning. One day your are on a Caribbean beach, the next a sun-drenched Mediterranean port. And you don’t need to pack and unpack. I can enjoy gourmet dining, catch a Broadway-style show, or simply watch the sunset from my balcony while the ship heads to its next destination. A lot of times, my wife and I have coffee or tea in the morning on bow, the front of the ship. We may be leaving the port, or cruising the ocean, but whatever the case, it’s nice to sit and relax. Cruising also lets me get a feel for multiple cultures in a single trip while being pampered at sea. It turns every voyage into both an adventure and a true escape.

What about Sea Sickness?
I’ll admit that before my first trip I wondered if I’d be clinging to the railing from sea sickness. But the reality is smoother than a frozen piña colada. Modern cruise ships have stabilizers that keep the ride steady even when the sea gets a little rough, so most days you barely feel a thing. Okay, that’s on the average days. Some days are a little bumpy, but not bad in my opinion. My wife has some problems on most boat rides, but she can handle cruise ships. She brings Dramamine and we try to book mid-ship on a lower deck, where she finds it is more “gentle.” That’s where the sweet spot is, where the ocean’s bounce is less bouncy. A few hours in, your body finds its sea legs and you’re free to enjoy everything the cruise offers. A lot of people get the prescription behind-the-ear patch, or the over-the-counter wrist acupressure bands, but I’m lucky and haven’t had to try them. If the work, let me know!
The Caribbean: Sun-Kissed and Carefree
The Caribbean is a natural playground for cruisers. with island-hopping between the blue-green coves of St. Lucia, the white-sand beaches of Barbados, to the colorful Dutch architecture of Curaçao. Spend your mornings snorkeling with sea turtles and your afternoons sipping rum punch in a breezy beach bar. The right cruise line makes all the difference. Here’s how I like to sum them up in no particular order:
- Virgin Voyages delivers an adults-only, boutique vibe with late-night beach parties at their private Bimini Beach Club. It’s my go-to cruise line for an upscale party vibe.
- Norwegian Cruise Line offers an energetic, family-friendly approach with plenty of onboard dining and entertainment. It’s kind of a “your choice,” kind of cruise with their Freestyle Cruising motto.
- Carnival Cruise Line packs its ships with lively fun, from waterslides to late-night pizza, and is perfect for travelers seeking big value and big smiles. People love Carnival for it’s value and party atmosphere.
- Royal Caribbean balances resort-style thrills, with activities like skydiving simulators and ice rinks, with island-hopping itineraries that appeal to every age group. These ships offer a lot of extras!
- Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea specialize in ultra-luxury, all-suite ships where every detail, from shore excursions to fine wines, is included. These are the cruises to take for a trip of a lifetime. Or if you crave the best of the best.
- Holland America charms with a classic ocean-liner feel, attentive service, and elegant mid-size ships that shine on longer, culture-rich itineraries. They are perfect for travelers who like a quieter kind of sophistication. It has more of the old-school ocean liner feel. They offer great trips to Alaska, fyi. I know, it’s not Caribbean or Mediterranean, but I wanted to put it in here.
- Princess Cruises blends relaxed elegance with innovative touches like “Movies Under the Stars” and destination-focused programs, making it a favorite for couples and families who want both comfort and authentic local experiences. It’s the upgraded Carnival cruise.
Whether you need a quick weekend escape or a two-week adventure, these lines make turquoise water and easygoing charm effortless.

The Mediterranean: Culture, Cuisine, and Timeless Shores
For travelers who like their sea days with a side of history and haute cuisine, a Mediterranean voyage is pure magic. Imagine breakfast in Barcelona, a morning stroll through the ruins of Pompeii, and a twilight dinner overlooking the caldera in Santorini. Cruise lines like Viking, Oceania Cruises, and Silversea craft itineraries that read like a highlight reel of Western civilization: the Amalfi Coast, the Greek Isles, the French Riviera.
- Viking is beloved for its destination-focused, culturally rich sailings with spacious, elegantly Scandinavian ships. These are excellent cruises and include a lot of immersive shore experiences and focus on the destinations, like Barcelona, Athens, Monte Carlo, or Rome.
- Oceania pairs refined service with culinary programs led by world-renowned chefs, ideal for travelers who follow their appetite across the globe. This hits me right in the stomach. I love these cruises. Gourmet, intimate, and sophisticated relaxation.
- Princess Cruises blends relaxed elegance with innovative touches like Movies Under the Stars and immersive destination programs, making it a favorite for couples and families seeking a polished yet approachable Mediterranean experience.
- Holland America charms with a classic ocean-liner feel, attentive service, and mid-size ships that excel on culture-rich Mediterranean itineraries perfect for travelers who prefer a quieter kind of sophistication.
- Silversea and Regent Seven Seas layer in true all-inclusive luxury: think butler service (for penthouse suites and higher), fine wines, and small-ship access to hidden harbors. These are all-suite, luxury cruises for sure.
- Royal Caribbean and Carnival also bring Mediterranean culture within reach for families and first-time cruisers, offering plenty of kid-friendly activities and wallet-friendly staterooms. These are the best for family cruising, as these ships have great kids programs and a lot of on-ship activities for younger people.
You’ll explore iconic cities and charming fishing villages without ever packing and unpacking your suitcase.

Cruising with Kids
Cruising with kids is easier than you might think, and it doesn’t mean sacrificing fun or comfort. Family-friendly lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival, and Royal Caribbean design their ships with parents and young travelers in mind, offering bigger staterooms that sleep up to five and making it simple to keep everyone together without juggling multiple cabins. Free kids’ clubs divide activities by age, so toddlers, tweens, and teens all have their own spaces and counselors. This helps keep kids entertained from breakfast to bedtime with everything from science experiments to scavenger hunts. My kids loved these on-ship programs, and the experience helped establish a travel mindset, so they enjoy traveling as much as I do. My youngest son always wants to take a cruise for his “Christmas Present.”
While the kids are off making new friends, parents can slip away for a spa treatment, a quiet cocktail, or a dinner for two knowing their youngsters are happily supervised. Across the cruise lines you’ll find plenty of included fun, with waterslides that twist across the top deck, poolside games, mini-golf courses, even evening Broadway-style shows, so you’re not nickel-and-dimed every time the kids want something to do. Watch for off-season sailings in the Caribbean or Mediterranean when fares drop and the weather is still warm if you can pull the kids out of school for a few days, or maybe on a fall or Thanksgiving break. An inside cabin can stretch your budget further, and you’ll barely notice the lack of a window when you’re busy checking out the ship or enjoying the fun in port. My wife actually prefers an inside cabin. It’s quiet, dark, and makes for great sleeping. With a bit of planning and a well-chosen itinerary, you can treat your family to a floating playground of beaches, history, and world-class entertainment, without blowing the family vacation budget and maybe without ever hearing anyone say “I’m bored.”

Q: What about seasickness?
A: Today’s ships are equipped with powerful stabilizers that keep the ride smooth. If you’re sensitive, book a mid-ship cabin on a lower deck and pack motion-relief wristbands or ginger chews; your doctor can also advise on prescription options like scopolamine patches. Dramamine works for my wife, fyi.
